2014 Emmy Predictions

cdn.indiewire.com

The 2014 Primetime Emmys were announced yesterday and they were their usual collection of insanity. You really shouldn’t take awards too seriously since they are so objective, but I really don’t take the Emmys seriously since they have a very checkered history with whom and what they have chosen to honor. The Emmys tend to reward the same people and shows over and over and historically have overlooked shows that are definitely worth some Emmy love.

But with those caveats, the nominations this year are a little better than they have been in the past. Of course there are still some omissions – nothing for Hannibal is a tragedy – and I will never understand the Emmy’s fascination with Modern Family, but the fact that Netflix received so many nominations is much more forward thinking than I would have expected. This year’s nomination are historic on two fronts: this marks the first time that The Simpsons has failed to nab a nomination since 1995 and Laverne Cox’s nomination for Orange is the New Black marks the first nomination for a transgendered actor.

The Emmys and I rarely agree, so take my predictions with a big old grain of salt, but below is the list of nominees in major categories as well as my best guess as to who will walk away with a statue. My predictions aren’t necessarily who I want to win, but who I think will win.

Best Comedy Series

The Big Bang Theory

Louis

Modern Family

Orange Is the New Black

Silicon Valley

Veep

Projected winner: Modern Family. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series

Lena Dunham, Girls

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Julia Louis Dreyfus, Veep

Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly

Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation

Taylor Schilling, Orange Is the New Black

Projected Winner: Julia Louis Dreyfus. She is a comedic force of nature and a known quantity to voters, so I think she emerge the winner.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Ricky Gervais, Derek

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

Don Cheadle, House of Lies

Louis C.K., Louie

William H. Macy, Shameless

Projected Winner: Jim Parsons.

Supporting Actor, Comedy Series

Andre Braugher, Brookiyn Nine-Nine

Adam Driver, Girls

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family

Ty Burrell, Modern Family

Fred Armisen, Portlandia

Tony Hale, Veep

Projected winner: Tony Hale. I’m betting big on the Emmy realizing the awesomeness of Veep.

Supporting Actress, Comedy Series

Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory

Julie Bowen, Modern Family

Allison Janney, Mom

Kate Mulgrew, Orange Is the New Black

Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live

Anna Chlumsky, Veep

Projected winner: Allison Janney.

Best Drama Series

Breaking Bad

Downton Abbey

Game of Thrones

House of Cards

Mad Men

True Detective

Projected Winner: Breaking Bad. Lots of worthy options here, but since this is their last rodeo I’m guessing that Heisenberg and the gang win.

Best Actress in a Drama Series

Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex

Claire Danes, Homeland

Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Kerry Washington, Scandal

Robin Wright, House of Cards

Projected Winner; Claire Danes. Homeland is borderline unwatchable now, but the Emmys usually lag a little behind.

Best Actor in a Drama Series

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom

Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Woody Harrelson, True Detective

Matthew McConaughey, True Detective

Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Projected Winner: Matthew McConaughey. I think that as a society, we all want McConaughey to try for the EGOT. And Jon Hamm will never win because that is that poor gorgeous man’s unfair lot in life.

Supporting Actor, Drama Series

Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

Jim Carter, Downton Abbey

Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones

Josh Charles, The Good Wife

Mandy Patinkin, Homeland

Jon Voight, Ray Donovan

Projected Winner: Peter Dinklage. I think this will be the only win for Game of Thrones.

Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey

Lena Headey, Game of Thrones

Christine Baranski, The Good Wife

Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey

Helena Bonham Carter, Burton and Taylor

Minnie Driver, Return to Zero

Kristen Wiig, The Spoils of Babylon

Cicely Tyson, The Trip Bountiful

Projected Winner: Cicely Tyson

Best Actor in a Miniseries or Movie

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing on the Edge

Martin Freeman, Fargo

Billy Bob Thornton, Fargo

Idris Elba, Luther

Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: His Last Vow

Projected Winner: Billy Bob Thornton

Supporting Actor, Miniseries or Movie

Colin Hanks, Fargo

Jim Parsons, The Normal Heart

Joe Mantello, The Normal Heart

Alfred Molina, The Normal Heart

Matt Bomer, The Normal Heart

Martin Freeman, Sherlock: His Last Vow

Projected Winner: Martin Freeman. I’m guessing all The Normal Heart nominees will cancel each other out.

Supporting Actress, Miniseries or Movie

Frances Conroy, American Horror Story: Coven

Kathy Bates, American Horror Story: Coven

Angela Bassett, American Horror Story: Coven

Allison Tolman, Fargo

Ellen Burstyn, Flowers In the Attic

Julia Roberts, The Normal Heart

Projected Winner: Julia Roberts. Emmy voters love to recognize movie stars. Though I would LOVE for Ellen Burstyn to win, just so that Flowers in the Attic will forever been known as an Emmy winner.

South Park

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Manhattan Project

Projected Winner: Bob’s Burgers

Dog with a Blog

Good Luck Charlie

Nick News With Linda Ellerbee – Family Secrets: When Violence Hits Home

One Last Hug: Three Days at Grief Camp
