Pop Culture Odds and Ends – October Baseball Edition

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been a terrible baseball fan this year. I only went to Yankee Stadium once all season (though it was a double-header) and I haven’t watch many games. Usually I’m glued to the TV or listening to the games on the radio, but when you start going to bed at 8 pm on a regular basis because your life has become very overwhelming, you tend to miss a lot. Thankfully, things have improved slightly which has coincided with the Major League Baseball playoffs, so I am once again back to screaming at the TV and hoping that the Yankees continue to outperform expectations. This is the first sign that I’m starting to feel like myself again. Hopefully the Yankees don’t get eliminated tonight so this feeling continues.

So while I hope that the Cleveland Indians are doing something to anger Jobu, get yourself caught up on all the pop culture that you might have missed with this week’s roundup.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Tom Petty Edition

I was mid-call with a co-worker when I saw the news. “Hold on,” I said. “Gotta call you back – Tom Petty is dead.” It turns out that when I saw that tweet Petty had not actually died yet, but the news still broke my heart. I think it broke everyone’s heart, because I don’t know a damn person who didn’t like Tom Petty. Petty was an everyman rocker who churned out hits like nobody’s business. Put on “American Girl” in a room full of people and I guarantee you you’ll hear murmurs of what a great tune it is and that people will start singing along. I’ve liked Tom Petty for as long as I can remember and it makes me so sad that he’s no longer with us.  I’ve seen Petty and the Heartbreakers perform, but I’m kicking myself for not going to see them on their 40th anniversary tour. Monday was already a very sad day after the mass shooting in Vegas, but losing Petty on top of that just made it worse. I don’t have much of a vinyl collection, but one of the few records I do own is Full Moon Fever. I played it Monday night in tribute.

R.I.P., Tom Petty. You will be missed.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Fall TV Edition

As the temperatures start to drop, that marks the beginning of Fall TV season. This used to be an exciting time of year for me – all these new shows to try – but as networks have started debuting shows throughout the year and the kill rate for new shows rapidly increased, I’ve kind of lost interest. As of now, I think the only new show that I’m even going to try is HBO’s The Deuce. The scuttlebutt about the new shows debuting this Fall has been particularly quiet, which leads me to believe that TV critics don’t have a ton of faith in this year’s crop of offerings. I’m not even that excited about some returning shows that I watch. I think I’ve become TV jaded.

The good news is that my lack of interest in Fall TV means I have more time to do other things, like focus on the blog and this week’s pop culture roundup. So while you figure out what new shows to take a chance on, check out the previous week in pop with today’s edition of the roundup.
