Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Netflix at Lunch Edition

One of my pop culture resolutions for this year was to make better use of my lunch hour at work by a) actually talking a lunch hour and b) using that time to watch Netflix on my phone. We’re only three weeks into 2017, but so far I’m really enjoying this change. I find that I am a lot less grumpy when I actually walk away from my desk for an hour and that despite my worries, the world does in fact keep spinning if I don’t answer an email during that time. Who knew? It feels kind of decadent to spend an hour watching Netflix; it almost feels like I’m playing hooky. And it’s been productive – I’ve already made it through the entire first season of The Crown and Bloodline, though I have watched some episodes at home. But it’s reminded me of all the great content on Netflix and I’m now taking better advantage of my subscription. So all in all, this is a net positive for me. Resolutions can be good!

Today we take a break from the plethora of movie reviews that I’ve been posting to check in on pop culture news with this week’s roundup. As usual, there is a little bit of something for everyone this week. So while I look forward to my daily oasis of Netflix, get yourself caught up on the pop culture that you might have missed.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Are the Olympics Over Yet Edition

This is a rough time of the year for me. As I’ve written before, unlike the rest of the world I don’t give a hoot about the Olympics. It just doesn’t interest me at all  and yet I cannot get away from it. Even with my valiant attempts to avoid any sort of coverage, I still know a lot about what’s going on. My friends made me watch parts of the opening ceremonies just to torture me (they also made me watch parts of the Mets game – that was a brutal night). Nothing else is really on TV. It’s all that people want to talk about. The Olympics are everywhere. This must be what it’s like to be someone who doesn’t watch Game of Thrones.

The Olympics have even crept into my sanctuary of pop culture. Putting together this week’s roundup meant wading into the Internet where Olympics coverage lives. For every article about what’s happening at the Television Critics Association press tour, I had to sidestep stories about the Internet falling in love with the flag bearer from Tonga. But for you guys I’m willing to make this sacrifice. So if you need a break from pretending to care about badminton, get yourself get caught up what was going on in the world of pop culture.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – In Need of a Distraction Edition

After the events in Paris Friday and then the subsequent debates about what to do with Syrian refuges, I think we’re all in need of a little bit of a distraction. It’s been a rough few days on the international landscape and the upcoming stress of the holidays has already begun to take its toll on people. I’ve noticed people are just generally a little crankier lately; lots of complaints about work and other life problems seem to have permeated my circle of friends. I’ve just started my physical therapy and while I’m excited to be closer to walking again like a normal person, there is understandably a lot of pain and discomfort as my body readjusts to putting one foot in front of the other. So I’m totally included in the group of people who, in the words of McDonald’s, could use a break today.

Thankfully the world of pop culture is always there for mindless distractions to help everyone forget about life for a while. Once you are down the rabbit hole of music, television and movies, it’s easy to forget about everything else. So if you need a little break from all the political Facebook posts and the sadness of what is happening in France, Lebanon, Russia and elsewhere, I’ve got you covered.
