Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Oscars Fail Edition

The Academy Awards were Sunday and my general feeling about it this year could be summed up in the following GIF:

For the first time in probably at least 15 years, I didn’t even watch the telecast and though I had extra time for the Oscar death race this year, thanks to the Olympics, I somehow managed to put in my worst performance ever. Not only did I miss out on the usual elusive categories like best foreign film and the shorts, I didn’t even complete the major categories, including Best Picture; in the end, my indifference to Dunkirk won out over my desire to see all the nominated films.  For me, I generally wasn’t all that enamored with a lot of the nominees that I did watch; I was rooting for Get Out and Ladybird to do well, but I didn’t have a strong opinion about most of the other films. I didn’t even hate any of them (a la War Horse); when most of them ended, I thought “that was fine” and that was the end of it. I’m hoping that this was just an overall “meh” year for movies and not a sign that I’ve lost interest in this entire endeavor. That would make me really sad.

So while I contemplate if this means I’ve having some sort of existential crisis, get yourself caught up with this week’s installment of the pop culture roundup.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – It’s All About Perspective Edition

As I’m sure you’ve heard over the past few weeks from anyone who lives in the Northeast, it’s been pretty freaking cold here. Like, potentially hell has frozen over cold. I almost exclusively wear dresses to at work and I’ve had to cave to the temperatures by wearing pants more in the past week than I have in perhaps the last five years combined. It’s been brutal. But the funny thing about it being so cold for so long is that everyone’s perspective has totally changed. I walked outside yesterday morning and it felt glorious; I didn’t even bother with a hat or gloves and all seemed right with the world.

It was only 30 degrees.

This Friday there is supposed to be a high of 50 and I guarantee you that it’s going to feel like a tropical vacation. Who cares if it rains all day – it’s not snowing and the air won’t hurt my face. That now qualifies as a win.

So while I contemplate whether it’s time to break out my sundresses again (it’s not), get yourself caught up on all the pop culture that you may have missed with this week’s roundup.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – The Plague Edition

Apparently a plague has settled in to my office, as pretty much everyone on staff has some degree of sickness. In an ideal world, everyone would get to stay home when they aren’t feeling 100%, but unfortunately that’s not the world we’re living in so the echoes of hacking coughs permeate my building. I don’t know if cough drops count as a food group, but I’ve pretty much been sustaining myself on them for most of this week. I started drinking hot toddys over the weekend which didn’t do much to prevent me from getting sick, but certainly diminished how much I cared about it.

So while I get IDed for the hundredth time buying cold medicine, get yourself caught up on the pop culture that you might have missed with this week’s roundup.
