Pop Culture Odds and Ends – The Bills are in the Playoffs (!!!) Edition

It finally happened – the Buffalo Bills are once again going to the playoffs. I honestly didn’t know if I would ever get to experience this as a fan; I wasn’t part of the #BillsMafia when they last made a playoff appearance in 1999 and there wasn’t much in my time as a fan to give me much hope. Up until this year, I had only seen one winning season as a fan. Going into the game Sunday, I was trying not to get my hopes up – a lot of things had to go right for the Bills to end their playoff drought. And if years of watching the Bills have taught me anything, it’s that things rarely go right for us. So New Year’s Eve was quite the emotional roller coaster; people at the bar were watching me watch the game because I’m pretty sure I had at least one nervous breakdown. Even when the Bengals scored their final touchdown to knock out the Ravens, I refused to celebrate until the clock hit zero and the game was official – and then I started crying and hugging people (including total strangers). That’s what being part of a tortured fan base will do to you.

I have no idea how far the Bills will actually make it in the playoffs, but just getting this particular monkey off their back is really enough for me. Sorry Seattle Mariners – you now wear the playoff drought crown. You have my sympathies.

So while I figure out if I should set up a GoFundMe page to get me to the playoff game in Jacksonville, catch yourself up on the pop culture that you may have missed over holiday break.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – I’m An Auntie Edition

He made us wait for it, but my nephew finally made his glorious debut on this planet last week. Kudos to my sister-in-law ushering this perfect little creature into our lives. It’s amazing how much he has changed all of us already and he isn’t even a week old. So far being an auntie is pretty easy – I show up, hold the baby for a while, and then get to bail if he gets fussy. Honestly, this is kind of a perfect arrangement. And it’s amazing how biology works – obviously this isn’t my kid, but when I look down at him in my arms, I’m pretty sure that I would take a bullet for him. Hopefully that theory is never tested, but who knows – it’s too early to determine how good he’s going to be at life choices.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Almost the Oscars Edition

It’s T-minus four days until the Oscars and once again my Oscar death race has kind of petered out as we cross the finish line. I’m still hoping for a strong finish this weekend, but I’m punting the Best Foreign Film, Best Original Song and all the Shorts categories because they are impossible to track down or were only available for a limited time and I missed them. This is probably the latest in the process that I’ve still had some of the performances in the acting categories to watch, which is more a testament to the fact that I don’t really want to watch Steve Jobs or 45 Years than anything else. I totally forgot about the documentary features, which I do want to see, so it may be a long weekend of Netflix and no chill for me. Got to stay focused. The upside of this is that since I’ve accepted that I’m not going to be able to see everything, I can continue my boycott of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was already ruined for me anyway. Children do not quite grasp the concept of “spoiler alert.”

But my laziness with the Oscar death race does not extend to the pop culture roundup; instead of watching the remaining Oscar nominees, I’ve been scouring the web, near and far, to find the best that the world of pop culture has had to offer in the last week. I’ve put together quite the smorgasbord of pop culture stories, so go ahead and get yourself caught up while I pour over movie times and streaming options.
