Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Pi Day Edition

Today is Pi Day (March 14 = 3.14), though since I’ve lost the ability to keep track of the date I am unprepared to celebrate today. I’m actually not a huge pie fan – there are some pies that I like but it isn’t my go to dessert – though perhaps I can swing by a restaurant this evening to get a slice to go. I hate to miss out on food related celebrations.  Had I been in NYC today, I would have grabbed a slice of crack pie from Milk Bar, which is probably my all-time favorite (key lime and pumpkin are close seconds). Now I’ve made myself hungry.

Also pretty tasty – this week’s pop culture roundup. So get yourself caught up on all the pop culture that you may have missed in the last week – and feel free to have a slice of pie while doing so.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Oscars Fail Edition

The Academy Awards were Sunday and my general feeling about it this year could be summed up in the following GIF:

giphy

For the first time in probably at least 15 years, I didn’t even watch the telecast and though I had extra time for the Oscar death race this year, thanks to the Olympics, I somehow managed to put in my worst performance ever. Not only did I miss out on the usual elusive categories like best foreign film and the shorts, I didn’t even complete the major categories, including Best Picture; in the end, my indifference to Dunkirk won out over my desire to see all the nominated films.  For me, I generally wasn’t all that enamored with a lot of the nominees that I did watch; I was rooting for Get Out and Ladybird to do well, but I didn’t have a strong opinion about most of the other films. I didn’t even hate any of them (a la War Horse); when most of them ended, I thought “that was fine” and that was the end of it. I’m hoping that this was just an overall “meh” year for movies and not a sign that I’ve lost interest in this entire endeavor. That would make me really sad.

So while I contemplate if this means I’ve having some sort of existential crisis, get yourself caught up with this week’s installment of the pop culture roundup.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Grading Hell Edition

So this week has basically been a perfect storm of crap – work has been tremendously busy and stressful as I’m juggling a lot right now and I also had to grade all the exams for the class that I’m teaching which is a huge time suck. Add to that the fact that I haven’t been sleeping well and some stuff going on in my personal life (not me, but many of my friends are having a rough week) and I’m pretty much living this meme right now:

I honestly forgot that yesterday was even Wednesday, which gives you a pretty good idea where my head is at. So with apologies, here is your slightly delayed installment of this week’s pop culture roundup.
