Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Oscars Fail Edition

The Academy Awards were Sunday and my general feeling about it this year could be summed up in the following GIF:

giphy

For the first time in probably at least 15 years, I didn’t even watch the telecast and though I had extra time for the Oscar death race this year, thanks to the Olympics, I somehow managed to put in my worst performance ever. Not only did I miss out on the usual elusive categories like best foreign film and the shorts, I didn’t even complete the major categories, including Best Picture; in the end, my indifference to Dunkirk won out over my desire to see all the nominated films.  For me, I generally wasn’t all that enamored with a lot of the nominees that I did watch; I was rooting for Get Out and Ladybird to do well, but I didn’t have a strong opinion about most of the other films. I didn’t even hate any of them (a la War Horse); when most of them ended, I thought “that was fine” and that was the end of it. I’m hoping that this was just an overall “meh” year for movies and not a sign that I’ve lost interest in this entire endeavor. That would make me really sad.

So while I contemplate if this means I’ve having some sort of existential crisis, get yourself caught up with this week’s installment of the pop culture roundup.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Oscar Death Race Edition

The Academy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday and despite my very lackluster year of attending movies, I’m in pretty good shape going into this year’s Oscar Death Race. Once I cross three movies off my list – Dunkirk, The Phantom Thread, and The Post – I’ll have take care of most of the major categories and perhaps can spend more time focusing on my usual Waterloo (foreign films and documentaries). Most of the docs this year appear to be on streaming services, so I’ll focus my energies on tracking down the foreign films to the best of my ability. Of course, now that I’m working full-time and teaching a class two nights a week, my energies, such as they are, will probably be pretty limited.

So while I plot my best plan of attack, get yourself caught up on all the pop culture news that you might have missed with this week’s roundup.

Pop Culture Odds and Ends – Hail to the Chief Edition

Pop-Culture-608x500

Part of the reason that posts have been so few and far between lately is because I was promoted at work. I am happy about that of course, but in the words of a wise superhero, with great power comes great responsibility. I don’t even really have the great power part, but the responsibility sure has increased a lot. It makes the days go by faster, but it is also draining. Being chief of staff is exciting,  but it has great diminished my energy for blogging. Hopefully once I get used to the work/life balance, I can star cranking out these posts again.

But for now, you’ll always have the pop culture roundup. Evey in my busiest days, I’ll still find time for that. It’s your island in the desert of my pop culture coverage. So while I try to figure out how to get everything done, get yourself caught up on all the pop culture that you might have missed.
